Constant increase in blood pressure may be a sign that something is wrong within your body. It could also be a signal that your cardiovascular system is affected or not working effectively. If blood pressure is left high for a long time, it can lead to serious health problems such as; stroke and heart attack.

High blood pressure is maintained through lifestyle changes and sometimes, medication. In general, the lifestyle change approach also known as DASH (diet approach to stop hypertension) involves; cutting down on salt, fatty food, sugar, alcohol and other foods that are known to increase blood pressure.

In this article, we focus at some few foods that are known to play a significant role in decreasing blood pressure when consumed in adequate amount;

Fruits and Vegetables
Vegetables and fruits are known to be rich in potassium and low in salt. Excessive salt is responsible for increasing blood pressure. Eating more fruits and vegetables help to maintain salt at required level. Some of the best fruits and vegetables recommended for individual with high blood pressure are; apples, oranges, grapes, melons, celery, tomato and carrots.

Olive Oil
Olive oil is rich in unsaturated fats which help in regulating blood clotting and keeping the blood vessels clear. This help in minimizing the risk of developing heart disease and hypertension (high blood pressure).

Fish
Omega 3 fatty acid which is found in fish plays a major role in lowering the blood pressure. It prevents the blood vessels from getting inflamed and plague formation, hence maintaining clear blood vessels for a healthy blood pressure.

Green Tea
Drinking a half cup of green tea may lower the risk of developing high blood pressure, inflammation and heart diseases. Though, further studies is needed to fully ascertain the effectiveness of green tea in controlling blood pressure, it is believed the antioxidants (favonoids) that are found in drinks like ice tea play a major role in preventing heart diseases and hypertension.

These are some of the few foods that are known to decrease the blood pressure. In most cases, change in diet does not work alone and there is need to incorporate exercises and healthy living habits or even medication. If you think you are suffering from high blood pressure, consult your physician or dietician for a diet plan that is suitable for your needs.
